Benita Willis continues her interview with Brad from where she left off last week, talking about the impact her World Cross victory had in the lead up to the Athens Olympics, before carrying an injury into the 10000m.
She talks about life as a full-time athlete, travelling on the international circuit and moving to Boulder and the different coaches and training systems she had over the years as well as running her marathons in 2008 and 2012 and why track speed was an important component of her training before her final marathon at the London Olympics and the decision to retire from professional competition. From there Benita talks openly about the challenges in transitioning from professional athletics into the workforce, getting into coaching and her roles in Queensland Athletics, organising training groups and role as a Gold Coast Marathon ambassador as well as addressing issues in the IAAF Commission, giving her thoughts on the newly implemented ranking system and Diamond League removing 5000m races from the program.

Benita Willis talks with Brad this week to coincide with the 15th anniversary of her World Cross Win at Brussels 2004, talking about the recent championship at Aarhus and her particular takeaway from the junior performances. Benita goes over growing up as a hockey player, in a sporty family in Mackay and how her love of team sports evolved into getting into running at school and running to race.She goes into the progression of training, coaches and training partners that influenced her form as she represented Australia in the World Junior Track & Field and then onto the 2000 Sydney Olympics, recounting the experience of the Opening Ceremony and the atmosphere in the stadium running her 5000m.
Benita talks about moving from Australia to the UK to compete on the professional circuit, and the drive she had in taking every national record she could while running the 1500 and 5000 at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.The first half of this interview concludes with the 2004 World Cross Country Championship in Brussels, how she was suited perfectly for cross country running, going over the championship races in the lead up, how the race unfolded and how she processed the race afterwards.

The World Cross Country Championship was held on a tough course in Aarhus, Denmark and victory was taken out by Joshua Cheptegi of Uganda and Hellen Obiri of Kenya. The Men’s team featured Brett Robinson coming in at 30th, a surprise performance from Matt Ramsden in 39th, while Melissa Duncan came 26th in women’s race. The Australian Men’s team placed 8th while the Women’s team placed 5th.
