Julian recaps his 14:23 in Box Hill Burn 5000m...then gets food poisoning later in the week.
Brad’s over his cold but battles with a sore back and tries to sort out his time trial options.
Brady puts in one of his fave workouts and his biggest week in a while before mulling over racing options.

It was an eventful night at the Box Hill Burn, with Izzi Batt-Doyle narrowly missing the Olympic Qualifier in 15:11.07 the 9th fastest all time, over the top of Lauren Reid and Lydia O’Donnell while paced by Gen Gregson.
Stewy McSweyn ran 13:05.87 for the fastest time on Australian soil in 15 years. 


Linden Hall 2:35.90 new National and Oceania Record, while Claudia Hollingsworth at age 15  came second for 2:36.72 still under the old mark. Catriona Bisset who spearheaded the initiative while raising funds for Lifeline, ran third for 2:38.42

In the Men’s 1000m, Pete Bol 2:18.79, narrowly edging Brad Mathas in 2:18.97

Run The Bridge in Hobart was won by Gen Gregson and Jack Rayner in new course records with Gen winning the Battle of the Sexes. Ellie Pashley and Sinead Diver placed second and third for the women while Liam Adams and Joel Tobin-White filled the podium on the men’s side.

Trial of Miles Racing: The Texas Qualifier hosted by Citius Mag in Austin, Texas USA was held over two nights as an opportunity for athletes to run Olympic Trials Qualifiers. The event broadcast free over YouTube featuring light pacing, commentary and drone coverage. Australian Charlie Hunter ran 3:37.61 in the Men’s 1500m.

The 76th and final edition of Lake Biwa Marathon sees Kengo Suzuki smash the Japanese Marathon Record, taking a huge portion off his prior personal best to become the first Japanese runner to run sub 2:05 as 42 men run under the 2:10 mark.

Listener Question track clubs popping up everywhere and the viability of the boys heading up for Gold Coast Marathon. Moose preaches the patience required to truly get marathon training sessions right and then the boys close with their predictions for this weekend’s Run The Bridge in Hobart.

Michael Crawley, author of Out Of Thin Air and Assistant Professor Durham University joins Brady, starting with an insight on the current state of lockdown in England and then sharing the parallels between in him in Brady in his personal bests, including a sub-2:20 at Manchester Marathon that was declared invalid before going on to set his personal best running with the elite women. Michael then chats about how he got into running with his dad and meeting his childhood coach who would inspire him on to write the blog Acceptable in the Eighties and train as they did in his coach’s day, replicating the training in his diaries for his half marathon personal best and training for London Marathon to qualify for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. After a break and some life experience Michael shares the inspiration to begin his research project and write the book, detailing his time in Ethiopia and learning the Amharic language and getting used to the specific customs and training principles around the running lifestyle. He discusses the pace of training runs, the role that technology has, the elusiveness of revered figures like Haile Gebrselassie and Keninisa Bekele as well as writing for runners and how to bridge connectivity between Ethiopian athletes and the public with better cultural understanding then closing the chat with who inspires him, the accessibility of shoes in Ethiopia and what’s ahead for him personally.

At the Victorian 5000m Championships, Ellie Pashley commanded the race from start to finish running 16:03.75 solo on a humid night. It was a thriller in the Men’s race, with Queenslander Tim Vincent breaking from Tom Thorpe and Michael Roeger from South Australia to take out line honours in 14:07.03.

Rose Davies, winner of the 2020 Zatopek:10 7th fastest female over 10000m joins Brad to debrief her performance, mental approach to the race and form, training camps in Perisher and Bendigo and race execution and that winning kick home. She then talks about her next move from there before reviewing her personal bests and where her strengths lie and getting into her origin story.
Competing at national cross as a junior and experience with coaching, dealing with a hip injury as a teenager and how it affected her motivation before changing to Scott Westcott and the difference in culture, resparking her motivation and building her progression in mileage and volume. As important was changing her mental approach to racing, gaining confidence and maturity when fronting to the line typical training week and injury current durability.

Rose mentions getting interest from US Colleges and choosing to train in Newcastle and goes into her life outside of running and how much impact a night out has on training, rounding out with her favourite training session, sponsorship with New Balance, current studying and plans for the year ahead.

Izzi Batt-Doyle chats with Brady, fresh off her second place in Zatopek:10 and running the 9th fastest 10,000m all time, debriefing her performance of the night and plans going in ahead.
Izzi gives a brief history of her personal bests and how pivotal the City-Bay Fun Run in Adelaide played in her budding running career. From here she made the decision to pursue running on a more serious level, pursuing a NCAA scholarship in the USA first with St John University in New York, then transferring to University of Washington going into the decision and transfer process between colleges, sharing her insights and takeaways from her time in the system. Among her challenges was dealing with former coach Greg Metcalf and how training under him attributed to multiple bone stress injuries and mental burnout sustained from the intense racing schedule, and the routine of training under Metcalf up until his resignation amid harassment allegations which lead to the huge cultural change with the instatement of the Andy & Maurica Powell and the positivity they brought to the cross country program.
Amongst winning the NCAA 10,000m Bronze, Izzi goes into the impact of sustaining injuries both physically and mentally and the support from her boyfriend Riley, then draws closer to the present day with the return home to Adelaide and having a breakout domestic season during the pandemic in 2020 as well as the transition to her coaching business Run As One.

Izzi rounds out the interview with how her training is structured now, what her inspirations and future trajectory within running are and what it means to “pour from a full cup”.

Zatopek:10 was an action packed night, headlined by a suspenseful race where Rose Davies won the National 10000m Championship over Izzy Batt-Doyle and Andrea Seccafien, in a time of 31:39.97, the 7th fastest women of all time. Brett Robinson was the breakaway winner in 28:00.25 over teammate Jack Rayner. Linden Hall was dominant in the 1500m, while Jarryd Clifford once again broke his own T12 1500m WR in 3:42.9 with Jordan Williamsz taking the race outright. Jeff Riseley turned back the clock to take out the Men’s 800m and Catriona Bisset won the Women’s 800m.
