Jess Stenson returns after her stellar performance at the Perth Marathon, becoming the fourth fastest Australian woman of all time and fastest on Australian time in a time of 2:25:15.
Jess starts the story from the last six months, in what was the then lead up to the Penrith marathon trial before injury struck and was forced to withdraw. After recovering from a few injuries and assessing some opportunities, Jess shares how the decision to race Perth came about and taking inspiration from the Tokyo Olympics. Jess shares with Brad and Julian the details of her training program in terms of loading, specificity and paces while combining with cross training to supplement her volume.
After arriving in Perth and getting a lay of the course and expectations, Jess recaps the race and her pacing strategy with teammate Matt Clarke leading the way to 32km and responding to her intuition. Jess goes into her headspace for getting through the race, processing the race by feel and internal feedback over split times as well as dealing with moments where her quad tightened up mid-race.

Jess entertains the potential for future races and whether she goes for World Championships, what marathon she wants to take on next and how she’s getting used to the supershoes in her approach to training and racing whether it helps her injuries.

The conversation concludes with Jess explaining the concept of “Mum Strength”, tips for runners returning post-birth as well as balancing parenting and competing alongside husband Dylan and rounding out with plans for the summer.
